Event description:
Wormholes and the black hole information paradox
Abstract: Black hole evaporation appears to create too much entropy,
in a way that violates the unitarity of quantum mechanics. This is the
essence of Hawking’s black hole information paradox. I will describe
recent progress on this problem involving spacetime wormholes and the
appearance of “islands” in the black hole interior. This leads to a
new result for the entropy compatible with unitarity, and has general
consequences for how we interpret black holes in quantum gravity.
