Event description:

A number of metals have been observed to violate Landau’s Fermi liquid theory in the last few decades but the theory of such phases has been challenging. In this talk, I will discuss a theoretical approach to obtaining some reliable insights into such non-fermi liquid metals. Focusing on ideal clean systems, I will discuss general constraints on the emergent low energy symmetries of compressible states of quantum matter. These constraints may be viewed as a generalization of the Luttinger theorem of ordinary Fermi liquids. I will show how these constraints may be leveraged to learn about transport in such systems. Time permitting, I will describe some surprises in some specific models of compressible quantum matter.
