Event description:

The quantum Hall phenomenon provides a platform for realizing novel quantum matter that hosts incompressible bulk states with gapless chiral boundaries. Since their initial discovery, the zoology of quantum Hall states, e.g., the quantum spin Hall effect and topological insulator, have attracted much attention from both the theoretical and experimental communities.
In this talk, I will introduce a `dipole’ version of the quantum Hall effect.
Namely, we focus on strongly interacting systems with both charge and dipole moment conservation.
By building microscopic lattice models via coupled wire constructions, we manifest a class of dipole quantum Hall states that renders a dipole-insulator in bulk, with gapless boundary modes exhibiting various quantum anomalies on the edge.
