Condensed Matter Seminar: Eugene Demler, Harvard University, “Illuminating insights into strongly correlated systems”

This talk will review several novel applications of optical probes to study strongly correlated electron systems. I will discuss light scattering experiments from excitons in MoSe2 that have demonstrated 2D Wigner crystals of electrons in a zero magnetic field and without the superlattice potentials. The quantum liquid to crystal transitions in this material in a bilayer geometry and in a magnetic field, including at integer filling factors, will also be covered. I will review pump and probe experiments in the high temperature superconductor YBCO, which reveal parametric resonance between phonons and Josephson plasmons. I will demonstrate that this mechanism explains pump induced changes in the terahertz reflectivity of these materials both in the superconducting and pseudogap phases. These experiments suggest strong pairing correlations across the entire pseudogap regime.
