Event description:

This talk will review past hints in support of sterile neutrinos associated with light, ~1 eV neutrino masses, and the challenges in definitively confirming or refuting their existence. The upcoming Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab aims to tackle this question, and it is interesting to explore how this program can address this question in the most holistic way possible. In particular, the talk will present SBN’s sensitivity to extended models with multiple sterile neutrinos, which have been shown to be more viable when confronted with all existing experimental constraints. In these extended models, the possibility of additional CP violation in the neutrino sector, associated with these new neutrino states, invites the question whether SBN could be in position to produce the first evidence for CP violation in the lepton sector in the next few years. This will also be discussed during the talk.
